Trying NaBloPoMo

NaBloPoMo_2015

Why not right? So many of you are doing NaNoWriMo, I’m feeling like I am missing out. I can’t handle a novel at this point in time. I’ve got a grant deadline in early December, so that is where all my writing should be going. I don’t think I could write a novel anyway. Blog posts are more my speed and what better way to get back into the habit of writing, right?

Actually, I should have been a little less impulsive in signing up yesterday. Considering this is the 4th post since I went MIA 7 months ago, this may be too big a commitment. I want to be writing again, but I am still having trouble managing depression. I was really looking forward to doing A-Z last April. I even prepared ahead of time! It didn’t matter though. Depression took over and it was a spectacular flop. At least it was spectacular right?! Glass half full. 🙂

Since this whole thing started yesterday, Halloween (I must have been possessed), I have no idea what I am doing. I did sign up at BlogHer, so I will probably be using the prompts over there most of the time. Outside of that, I’ll babble about depression, grad school and life in general. Sometimes the scientist in me just has to share something cool I learned. That has been rare in the last while since I am mad at my Ph.D. and everything related to it. Maybe I’ll try to doodle again, no promises though!

NaBloPoMo is really hard to write without typos. Does anybody say that out loud? I keep messing it up when I try to say it.

I will leave you with Ewok’s discovery of the Lego Express.

Happy NaBloPoMo everybody!

Lego Town Population Boom

Lego Town has continued to grow since my last Lego post. There was a lot of construction just after Christmas. Things have slowed down considerably since then. There has been one new addition though! The Lego Creator Bike and Coffee Shop. Hubby has decided to separate the two buildings in this set because that’s the way it happens to fit on the table best at this moment in time.

Above is the outside of the Bike Shop. You can see the bike in the window. Both buildings are two story, smaller than the regular modular sets. Below is a bird’s eye view of the Bike Shop. It comes with a rooftop BBQ.

The building also opens up so you can see inside. The bottom floor is the shop and above is an apartment with a bed and kitchenette. You get to the apartment from a ladder inside the Bike Shop. I guess the Bike Shop owner must live in the apartment.

Across the street is the Coffee Shop which, in my opinion, was long overdue. How can a town not have a coffee shop?! Like the Bike Shop, it’s two story and opens so you can see the inside.

The Coffee Shop has indoor and outdoor seating. It even has an ATM machine on the side there. Hubby has a cop outside the shop enjoying his java. The cop came from his Lego advent calendar I think. The apartment upstairs has a nice balcony and a private entrance out back (unlike the Bike Shop).

The shop serves cupcakes (the pink things), pie and coffee. Hubby gave Emo Chick from Series 12 the job of manning the cash.

Since this set was bought from the official Lego Store, at the beginning of the month, Hubby got freebies! A flower cart and a Lego friends golf thing. He built the flower cart and is saving Lego Friends for Ebay.

The Lego Town population has also been booming lately. So much so that construction can’t keep up and many minifigs have been left homeless! Luckily, the Lego Minifigure Series characters come with stands, so they’ve been converted into statues for the time being. Hubby decided he wanted to start collecting the Series minifigs. For those of you who don’t know, they all come packaged like this.

legopackage

So you have no idea what you are getting. There is a new set every year and the previous year becomes retired (hard to find). He got a few of Series 12 (last year) before they all sold out, now he is on to Series 13. Last week, we were in an art supply store getting stuff I needed to keep on drawing and art journaling when he stumbled across a collection of Series 12 packages. Who would have thought you’d find them in an art store?? Obviously not too many people because they haven’t sold out yet. Anyway, I went shopping and left Hubby to feel up the Lego baggies trying to figure out which was which. He did really well. He got all of the ones from Series 12 that he wanted, with no duplicates! Here is his collection of Series minifigs so far.

Share Your World 2015 – Week 1

This post starts off a new year of “Share Your World” hosted by Cee’s Photography. I joined in part way through last year. Let’s see if I can do the whole year this time! Thanks to Cee for her creative questions every week.

How do you get rid of pesky phone calls from telemarketers?

I ignore them. Caller ID is a wonderful thing! They usually come from area codes I don’t recognize or are using some derivative of my own phone number, so they are easy to recognize. I know there is a chance I could be missing a real call, but I figure if it’s important, they’ll leave a message.

What are you a “natural” at doing?

I’m not sure. Creating clutter perhaps. I am never able to finish a project in one sitting. When I get interrupted, I pile what I’m using (ex. scrapbook stuff) off to the side so I can get back to it easily. But then, I have trouble getting back to it. For instance, work stuff will come up and I’ll have to get all my research junk out….but then I’ll need to take a break. So I pile up the research stuff to get out a sketchbook to doodle in. Then, I go back to the research, but leave the drawing supplies in a pile ready for my next break. So you see, it starts to build up. Eventually it becomes distracting and I give up and put it all away.

How often do you get a haircut?

I get a cut about three times a year. I have long hair, so I can get away with that. Split ends are annoying, but I’ve stopped blow drying my hair. Air drying keeps the ends much nicer for a longer period of time. Here is Lego me with Lego Hubby at the Lego Town coffee shop! (Yes, he bought himself another creator set!) My hair is pretty much like that, maybe not so orange, but you get the idea.

What’s the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “fun”?

There are two things that come to mind right away and they are polar opposites!

The first is something calming and artsy. I love to sit on the floor at my coffee table with my art supplies surrounding me and just getting lost in it all. Last year, I was usually drawing. So far this year, I’m playing around with mixed media. Here’s an art journal entry to give you an idea.

Art Journal entry – watercolour, watercolour pencil crayons, gel pens, sharpie

The second thing is an adventure. For example, caving with Hubby. Inside the caves we climbed up waterfalls and jumped off them. I was scared out of my wits, but it was exhilarating! It was on our honeymoon in Belize. You can read more about caving and other Belize adventures here.

Bonus question:  What are you grateful for from last week, and what are you looking forward to in the week coming up?

Last Week: I am grateful that Hubby and I were both off work and got to spend some time together. We both got the flu, but at least we got time to hang out.

This Week: I am looking forward to hearing from the psyc program I am working with. I’m supposed to be starting group therapy as well as returning to individual therapy.

Unikitty Takes Lego Town!!

I think Unikitty is great. I like Lego, unicorns and cats, so of course I would appreciate all three things wrapped up in one tiny pink entity! I can also relate to the Unikitty character from the movie. She constantly tries to stay calm and positive no matter what is going on around her or in her head. Sometimes this gets to be a bit much and her emotions get away from her resulting in an explosive reaction. Although Unikitty is a bit more extreme, that is definitely me most of the time!

My husband thinks Unikitty is completely ridiculous, which I have no argument for. This fact just makes me like her even more! So I was quite pleased, thanks to my sister and much to my husband’s dismay, that Unikitty joined our growing Lego town last week! While Hubby wasn’t looking, Unikitty took Lego town by storm! All the inhabitants of Lego town flocked to the Chinese Theatre to see her, haha. Hubby was not pleased.

Lego town has grown quite a bit since the last time I posted about it. Before this Lego craze started, Hubby promised to dismantle his creations when they started to take up too much space. Both of us can no longer sit at the dining table with Lego town. I miss my table, but I haven’t the heart to ask him to put it away yet. It makes him so happy and it is pretty neat!

The Grand Emporium is the most recent addition. It’s a three story, modular corner piece built to be a department store. The details are fun….. a revolving door, billboards, escalators, a cashier, a window washer and a changing room that includes a minifig trying on a pair of pants. There is even an intricate chandelier on the third floor. So far, it keeps going all Phantom of the Opera on us.

The Emporium has some extra space in it, so Hubby stuck the Research set he got from my sister in there. The Research set is awesome! Lego was receiving complaints that all the minifigs coming with sets were male, so this set is all female. It was designed by a fan and was so well received that Lego decided to manufacture and market it. It comes with three scientists (a chemist, an astronomer and a paleontologist) and their associated equipment.

If anyone out there is following these Lego sets, then you’ll know the Grand Emporium is a recently retired set and is REALLY hard to find for a reasonable price. When I say retired, I don’t mean it goes back into the Disney vault kind of retired. I mean done. As in vintage set, never to be manufactured again. At least that what Lego is doing so far. I searched everywhere for this set. My aunt actually found it for me. A friend of hers had just started working at this random toy store and they happened to have it. Upon seeing this toy store, I couldn’t figure out how they stayed open. It was hidden in some industrial area and there were no signs. I never would have come across it if it weren’t for my aunt.

As it turns out, luck was really on my side…or maybe Hubby’s side, because when I went to the store to get the Emporium, I found another retired set for regular price. Whoohoo! It was the Apple Tree House, a cute little cottage set with a yard. On top of all this, my folks got him the kid’s Treehouse.

I think it’s suffice to say Hubby was spoiled rotten this holiday season! So the least he can do is let Unikitty into his Lego town!

A Very Lego Summer: NYC Edition

It looks like Hubby’s Lego craze is continuing. If you missed the beginning of the Lego saga, read this post. There have been new additions to his Lego city and we did everything Lego in NYC. By everything Lego, I mean we saw the Rockefeller Lego Store, we saw the Lego exhibits at FAO Schwartz and the Times Square ToysRus. Below is the Rockafeller Center complete with Batman watching over the area.

There was even…wait for it…..a Lego art exhibit! I’m not kidding! It was actually a really great exhibit. It’s called The Art of the Brick. It’s a combination of original pieces and Lego replicas of famous works. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone who may go see it, but I’ll post my favourite piece here, Van Gogh’s Starry Night. Van Gogh is a favourite of mine.

We found out we could save over $50 on Creator sets if we bought them while in the US. He decided he had to get the movie theatre next. The NYC Lego store however, was severely lacking, they didn’t have it! So he got the Parisian Cafe instead. We passed another Lego store in a Mall on the way home. That one had the Movie Theatre, so now there are two new Lego sets! Am I crazy to be letting him get this stuff? It’s taking over my kitchen table! I figure as long as it’s his “fun money” he is spending and he’s enjoying it, it’s ok. I decided to jump on the Lego band wagon too….I found myself a Unikitty keychain. Ridiculous, I know, but I really like Unikitty.

2014-08-15 10.11.18

We’ve been home a few days now and both Lego sets have been built. The Cafe took him an entire day to build. Here is the movie theatre. It was modeled after the famous Asian-looking theatre in Hollywood. I love the roof. The details are amazing. It even comes with a walk of fame and a limo.

The Cafe was more complicated. It had indoor and outdoor seating as well as the kitchen. The 2nd floor was an apartment with an artist’s loft on the top floor.

And now, here is Hubby’s little Lego town; a Pet Shop, a townhouse, Two Apartments, a movie Theatre, A Cafe and artist’s Loft and a house int he back.
